CA78 blowing headlights

Post by JRT68 » Tue Jun 02, 2009 11:32 am

This is getting kind of expensive... my Dream is blowing headlights after riding around a short while, high & low beams. It has eaten two of them. Any thoughts, bad ground? Also, I did a search for the string about cutting open sealed beams and replacing with H3's or H4's but couldn't seem to track it down. can anyone relate their experience or link that thread. Thanks

You can cut the rear of your bulb off with a Dremel cuttoff wheel. Leave about an eigth of an in.
Then insert a phillips screw driver and break the inside bulb.Turn it over and shake out the broken peices.
You can then epoxy a new Halogen bulb in the hole.
Sorry I don't remember the right wattage bulb to use. You will have to bend the wiring connectors on the bulb to a ninety deg. angle, it will be a tight fit.
There is a website that explains which bulb to use. I'll see if I can find it.

Did you do any trouble shooting on your charging circuit.I know reading some old posts you could have issues with high voltages if things are not correct in your system.I did have low beam go out only after teo years on a new bulb. Not sure why, but that was the only one had go bad and I do not use my headlight much in the day time.Joe

May be a daft Q, but have you been using 12V bulbs? If so, check the voltage at the lamp connector with a meter whilst the engine is running at, say, 4000 rpm.
