THE SWITCH IN THE HEADLIGHT IS THE QUICKEST CLUE AS TO EARLY LOOM. (4 WIRE IS EARLY)
THE LITTLE BULB IS "PARK ONLY" AND THE US ISSUE DIDN'T GET THAT SETUP.
CAREFUL WITH THE "GREEN WIRES".
ONE IS GROUND AND THE OTHER I THINK IS 12 VOLT.
ONE HAS A WHITE IDENTIFIER ON IT. .............LM

There is a separate bulb in the headlight that is powered while the switch is in this position.

Putting the ignition switch in position 1 I have 12.5v at the coils and the starter solenoid also clicks.

So, just the lighting to figure out. How do I know if I have an early or late loom? It looks like I have a green wire for the later switch, but green is also used to the headlamp and speedo bulbs.

Yeah but unfortunately the switch was bought after the loom and the existing switch may or may not be from this bike (I broke one for spares and carelessly didn't notice the two types of switch).

I see there's a 5 wire switch on ebay so I might give that a go if I can definitely say I have the later loom.

The sticker is pretty faded, could either be 1960 or 1966. The bike it came off is 1965 though which doesn't really fit.

Both bikes I had had broken light switches so I knew I needed one, and along with a lot of other bits they got hoovered up off ebay as and when they became available. If I have to buy a 5 wire switch I'll just chalk it down to experience and ebay the other one. A learning process - along with "don't buy cables from Thailand" - the throttle cable I have doesn't allow the slides to close fully as the cables are too short.

Had a chat with a "guru" in the UK and it seems that I definitely have the wrong switch, luckily not an expensive mistake.

On the plus side it turns over on the starter - woohoo! I'll try and do an update in my restoration thread tomorrow.
