Stange Electrical problem

Post by joeweir1 » Sat May 03, 2008 10:27 am

I was out riding my CA77 this morning with HD on and no problems.Stopped for awhile then started bike -ran fine.Stopped again shut bike off to talk to neighbor and when I hit the starter button I here a slight click and starter won't turn and neutral light dies and nothing works on bike.I sit there and in about a minute the netral light comes on and all lights work again!Hit starter again and same thing happens. After neutral light comes back on I kick start and away I go home.I tried to get it to do it again in driveway acouple times but it would not do it.Can't imagine why all power is lost and then just comes back on just sitting there?Kind of reminded me of and overload that resests itself.Any thoughts?

Hi Joe,
Look for a loose or corroded connection, starting with the battery terminals and proceeding to the grounding bolt. Check also the quality of the crimped lugs on the battery cables. Corrosion (greening-up -- verdigris or patina) can be removed with boiling water.
I'd plump for the grounding cable as a good contender to win this one!
It also could be the battery producing intermittent internal resistance; this can be eliminated by checking the battery voltage at the lead terminals (not the bolts or cable lugs) whilst trying to crank the motor -- the problem here is that the fault has to be present at that time; if the voltage stays above 12 then it's a poor connection, not the battery. If the voltage collapses then the batt is screwed.

Regards,

Steve

Possible that battery is too low, and not enough power to release starter magnetic switch, resulting in battery drain? these bike are notorious for weak charging system. Have you installed updated rectifier? Good quality battery?

The battery was replaced the end of last riding season and should be in good shape and I installed in March one of the early model high output rotors that I took off a scrap motor due to reommendations here.thanks
