Cadmium Plating

I'm looking to have a number of bolts and other parts on my CB77 cad plated, such as brake arms, exhaust collars, footpegs, etc. I was wondering what your experiences were with such and what sort of rates you found.

Locally I have been quoted a $125 minimum for cad plating.

I have had many many lots of hardware replated in clear cadmium over the years. I have always used a plater near me in Providence Rhode Island. When I first started using them, it was much like the price you stated. It has now become prohibitively expensive thanks to the EPA putting the squeeze on platers.

Who is going to prep the hardware? I would suggest going over every single nut, bolt and washer and make sure that all of the threads are chased, and burrs removed. Also if you have never used this plater before, it is probably a good idea for you to count every single piece you are sending them, that way you know exactly what you are giving them and what to expect back.

If you have a bead blaster I would also bead blast the hardware before giving it to them. That is something they will most likely do so if you do it, it may save you money. You need to specify that you want clear cad, this looks silver, as cadmium also comes in yellow.

This stuff is the best and it is getting hard to find places to do it, so I say give it a shot and let us know how it works out for you!

Scott, I use a plater in Hayward. It's $80 for a lot, I just really haven't figured out thier idea of what a lot is. Last trip there was $160, about 2 shoe boxes full of parts.

Thanks Phil, I wasn't sure if prepping myself would save money or not. I have a wire wheel I run everything on if that'll shave costs.

Davo, what's the name of that plater? I'd be into mailing parts if the price is right. Deez seemed to have some really nice results on his cafe with cad plating.

I use a company in Fort Worth. Texas and never a problem and to me the cost is not at all bad.
I clean all parts in carb cleaner than a short time in phosphoric acid and water then ship and when my parts come back they are super. ...lm

cad plating comes out sweet. davo and i use the same plater and they seem to do a pretty good job.
next time i get cad plating im gonna bead blast the parts first just to insure they come out perfect.
spargett dont get anything chromed from that shop right next to it. unless the part you are getting chromed is in absolute perfect condition. they are not good at prepping the part.
