TANK BADGES

Post by schutz600 » Sun Nov 16, 2014 1:24 am

The quest goes on!
I have managed to obtain an original honda shop manual printed in 1960 and a parts manual of the same year on disc for models C72/C77 CS72/CS77 CB72/CB77
On the front cover it says 250,300 so it looks as it was generally called a 300 not 305 according to the information?
The parts manual shows on page 129 item 22 the original part numbers for the tank emblems as follows=
Emblem right for CB 77-10001 original part number CY788811 then changed to 87121-279-810
Emblem left for BB77-10001 original part number CY788812 then changed to 87122-279-810
These numbers were also used for the CP77-10001 -31000001
The CB72-10001 used different part numbers right emblem CY728811 Then changed to 87121-230-010
Left emblem CY7212 Then changed to 87122-230-010
It does have the 87122 and 87121 overwritten? The numbers underneath are 87121-259-810 and 87122-259-810 respectively.
Will try and find out what the part number actually relate to, but if anyone has info on these i would appreciate it.
LOUD MOUSE you are most likley right it could have been 300 onthe tank emblem not 305.
If you would like copies of the shop manual and parts list i will do my best toget this done and post them to you.

Thank you for the offer of parts numbers.
As usual HONDA changed some parts several times but didn't offer what the change was.
Often the change was nothing more than having a different supplier.
The information you have given is sufficient now. ..................lm

LOUD MOUSE wrote: A better question may be- Why wasn't a HONDA badge which showed DREAM 247 issued.
The same reason the 305 as the 250 were issued as rounded CC displacement bikes like MOST all bikes were/are.even today.
Oh the desire for folks to have/ have seen that VERY SPECIAL, RARE PART/BIKE that HONDA never issued/made!. ................lm
A mystery that will likely remain unsolved! However why do people refer to the 250's as 250's instead of 247's and the 300's as 305's instead of 300's? The next generation replacement for the 305 was the 350 which is actually 325cc. I can only speculate that if it's a larger displacement you want everyone to know that, smaller displacement you don't want to admit the actual displacement! Then again I don't really care. I only offered up the pictures of the badges for discussion, it appears that there were at the very least a pair of these and probably a few more, those who say they saw badges that said "305" may not be mistaken. An A/M vendor may have wanted to capitalize on this and produced these. Who can say for certain.

I remember an article on the web a few years ago about a domestic version of the scrambler that was marketed as a CL305. Except for factory-mounted turn signals it looked a lot like the ones sold in this country. Maybe that's where the badges came from.

I have a good friend who owns one of these, they are CL300 not CL305. The badges on his are "Dream 300" which from what I've been told from many sources the domestic models did not drop the "Dream" from the badges on their bikes.

Back in the early 70's my neighborhood was full of so many different bikes that a kind of jargon evolved. My buddy's Suzuki TS 185 was never referred to that way, it was just Bobby's 185. Ralph's CL 77 or Scrambler 300 was referred to as Ralphies 305 in reference to its true displacement to differentiate it from all the other similar sized bikes. I imagine the same thing occurred in everyone's neighborhood. If anyone had called Ralphies bike a 300 I would of thought he got a new bike.
