Protecting Zinc Plating

Post by P.Martinez » Fri Nov 02, 2012 8:05 am

Searched the forum and found great info. on zinc plating, and am in the process of getting a plating setup going. However, thinking ahead, I know that eventually those nice, bright, shiny parts will start to turn dark gray from oxidation. I was thinking of clear-coating the parts to protect them. I don't want to start messing around with (highly toxic), clear chromate solutions. Anyone have other suggestions?

The normal commercial passivation is indeed toxic so not a 'home' treatment. Clearcoat may be Ok but it's going to look horrible over time if you use wrenches on it. A regular coating of WD40 or wax polish might help....
