Removing chrome? Tank panels in particular

Post by cyclon36 » Tue Nov 09, 2010 8:32 pm

As much as I love a nice chrome finish, I think I love a clean polished look better. I would love to be able to de-chrome the tank panels on by CB77 and polish up the steel underneath. it's something I'm still tossing around and am not even sure if it can be done with good results as I'm pretty sure it's not stainless. Has anybody here tried anything similar or have some feedback on the idea? In a perfect world, I have someone make me replicas out of aluminum so I could polish them up easier :-)

The people who are best at polishing steel are the guys who do chrome plating. In fact polishing the steel is the most expensive part of the job. Usually they will apply copper to fill the pits, nickel on top of that and then chrome. You could always get the guys to strip your panels, polish them and give them back to you as is.

It's going to be a high maintenance surface though, compared with just getting them plated in the traditional way. Having them stop at nickel would be cool and would give you an opportunity to do some polishing.

How about rubbing them down and painting them silver?

Thanks for the info. I'll get in touch with the plater I'm going to use when it comes time and ask him if he'll take care of it. I've read online that they can de-chrome parts in a similar way that they re-chrome them.

As for the paint, I don't think it could ever compare to an actual metal surface. Maybe from a 10ft test, but not up close.
