Need a bit of resto help

Post by plastic » Fri Apr 30, 2010 6:26 am

I just purchased a CA160 in OK cosmetic condition and unknown mechanical condition (engine turns over) I am in the process of breaking the bike down for a cleaning/inspection etc. How do I get the rubber knee guards off of the tank without destroying them, there is a bit or rust around them that I am trying to get off and cannot with them in place?
There are several pieces of the bike chrome that are in too bad of condition to cleanup, they either need to be re-chromed or replaced. is there a source besides eBay for this type of stuff, like the chain tensioner, chrome bolt on either side of the fork etc.?
I was taking some of the rust off the better chrome with navel jelly last night and accidently dropped some on the cooling fins for the head, when I wiped it off, it had brought the oxidized metal back to a new look, has anyone tried using this approach to clean/shine an engine?

Jelly

The first CL77 I did I used the aluminum naval jelly on the fins and it really cleaned it up as well---looked great when I was done. I would keep going unless others think it is not a good idea--but like I said--mine looked great and ran fine after.

Plastic, welcome to the forum! Try placing the tank in the sun for a couple hours , or use a heat gun, to soften the tank rubbers, and something slippery sprayed behind them to assist in removal Nick at Ohio Cycles in a good source for NOS parts. BTW, pics are alway appreciated!
