Ed, good explanation. Here's how I do it, not leaving it to chance. Before disassembling wheel, I put a straight edge to flanges on each side of hub, and measure the distance to the rim. Then when relacing, you can be sure the rim is centered back where it was before disassembly. So yes, while these are not technically offset, there needs to be a way to determine that it is centered in the hub.
