Another "what have I got" question

Post by Fyrmdk » Tue Aug 30, 2011 1:24 pm

I recently started working on my Dream. With the help of a good friend and vintage cycle enthusiaist, we have replaced all the cables, rebuilt the carb and petcock, mounted new tires and checked brakes and wheel bearings. We currently have no spark, and will be installing a new coil next week. I thought all along that this was a 1965 CA77 305 Dream. Apparently the engine number, CA77E 319658 indicates 1963? The frame number is CA78 314519. I thought I read on this forum that CA78 was used starting in 1964? Any additional education would be appreciated. I will post pics nest week. The bike is currently in Long Beach, and I am in San Diego.

Forgot to add, we also replaced the battery, plugs, plug caps, and wires. We also replaced the blown, foil wrapped 15A fuse we found in the inline fuse holder near the battery. What does this wire provide power for?

Welcome to the forum! The fuse provides power to just about everything. Coils rarely go bad, so I'd suggest looking around some more. Start with points, are they getting power?. Condenser, getting power? Coil, getting power? One thing I've seen a lot is the wire to the points grounding out. The wire to the points needs to be against the fibre washer, should be one on each side of the points arm. If not getting power to the points, unhook the wire from the points and see if it gets power that way. Let us know what you find!

You might check your ground to your frame as well.

The Serial number on mine is CA78 313246 which is a 63 as well.
63 CA78

Thanks for the responses. We do not have power to the points. The starter cranks without difficulty, and the ground strap looks ok. Will check the leads to the points next week shen we get together to turn wrenches again.

Also be careful that the connector on the end of the condenser wire that hooks to the points doesn't turn as you tighten the little nut and ground to the backing plate.

Bill Silver's Resto Manual for Dreams and the 1968 Dream parts book do not include a CA78 for 1963. For '63 the literature shows only a CA77 with serial numbers 310001 - 314731. CA78 is listed for both types of '64 model with no CA77's listed in '64 or thereafter. Hmmm. Apparently just another case where the Honda literature does not match what they actually did.

Other than making sure the VIN number on your title matches the VIN number on your bike, it would appear to make no real difference. I have never heard of any difference between CA77 and CA78 models and I have asked a number of times. Perhaps no one knows, because a person might have to have the two sitting side by side to detect a difference if there is one. I have also not stumbled across any part number applications showing a break between CA77's and CA78's.
