Gas Tank cleaning

Just my 2 cents, but I've cleaned out all my bike's tanks with just kerosene and BB's - put about 2 pints of kero in the tank, dump in a goodly amount of BB's or slingshsot ammo and shake, rattle and roll for a while; drain out the kero, take out the BB's with a magnet, top off the tank with gas, install an in-line fuel filter and there you have it. I've never had a problem with flash-rust after that. Cheaper than anything else, and I don't have to worry about anything slagging off later and clogging the gas inlets...and it works! :)

But that being said, if I was going to use a tank liner, I'd go with the POR-15; I've heard RedCoat is pretty good too, but yes, stay away from the Kreem...

Susan, if the stock jets and needle are in usable condition, put hem back in and try starting it again. Most of the brass in the am kits is not of the same quality as the origional parts.

well, I blew some of the carb out with compressed air and it's back to starting right up, yay.

it's idling way too high though. I adjusted the idle screw pretty much all the way out and it didn't make much of a difference. Adjusted the air mixture screw to where it was idling as low as it would go, but still way too high. I'm guessing the next thing to do (besides do a search on "high idle" around here) is see if there is anything up with the throttle cable.

I have to laugh at this point...and I have no doubt that once I get the idle sorted, all it will do is lead me to the next issue. Which is OK because I'm enjoying this part of it - but I am just ready to ride the thing already.

Susan,
Air leaks around the barb base and spacer block seem to be a common problem. Spray some carb cleaner around that area while idling and any fluctuation in RPM indicates an air leak. RW

Well, Susan. Bargain! A runner, no less.

High idle could be (most likely) sticking throttle/cable. Disconnect the air filter and make sure that the slide is snapping shut onto the idle screw.

Or it could possibly be a distorted carb body causing an air leak at the carb/head joint. Check the carb flange on a sheet of glass for flatness. O-rings good and in place?

ha ha, it seems I have another bad battery on my hands. I think this one wasn't more than a few months old, but it can't take a charge. Note that I haven't actually ridden the bike in this time, so it's not a problem with the charging system...it just sat for a little while and now foils me.

I tried to attack the idle problem and managed to, umm, borrow a similar battery from a friend's bike to get it started. Started right up, but it also had a distinct electrical burning smell. This was after I had spent a few hours in the heat fussing with the 1979 Vespa, so I was a little bit worn out already and not up to dealing with it.

I'm going to be truck support for a vintage scooter race tomorrow and Friday, and taking in the local scooter event (Scootergate!) over the weekend. So next week begins some time when I can concentrate on the Dream in earnest. Which I must do, since I was temporarily insane and just picked up a 1957 Zundapp Bella...yet one more thing that runs now but it bound to confound me eventually...

Seriously, though, could be the rectifier 'leaking' and discharging the battery. Testing, with a multimeter, is easy; disconnect the rec first.
