First steps for restoration? Pics of my 305Sounds as if you're off to a good start. Don't forget to remove and clean the oil pump - it has a screen. Order the 2 gaskets it will need. There are rebuild kits for the original petcocks. Be aware that the kits to change the petcock to a more modern version will require you to alter the tank to accept a threaded flange and you will not be able to go back to the old petcock later. Why not try rebuilding the old one first? What's your plan to clean and derust the gas tank?
I didn't realize I would have to modify the tank, I thought it was just an adapter.

The most basic seems to be using Vinegar or muriatic acid. I'm skeptical of it rusting after that though. And I've heard that the coatings you can use on the inside eventually fail and cause more problems. So that's something I'll be having to do more research on. [/url] I've used one and liked it, but I had to drill out the existing threaded holes and re-tap the threads. Now I see that the seller offers 3 mounting methods. I don't recall that those were offered when I bought it. As you said, there are many methods to derust a tank. Toilet bowl cleaner was one. I used a rust removal fluid and had good results. After derusting, rinse thoroughly with distilled water, dry with compressed air or a hair dryer and coat the inside with an oil. Some use 2 cycle oil or Marvel Mystery Oil. Just keep it coated until you mount the tank and fill it with gas.
