CA77 Shift Shaft Spline size

Post by randioury » Mon Jan 25, 2016 9:48 pm

In response to someone's comment about the splines looking boogered up - they are not. They are actually fine.
I've not been able to find a serial number breakdown for year of manufacture so I'm wondering how you are determining the bike being possibly a 66+? Not being argumentative, just trying to get to the bottom of things.
Also, I ordered yet another shift lever. This one was supposedly off of a 66 machine. It too does not fit. It too had an internal diameter of around .400". So I heated the sucker up, got it red hot and split the gap out as far as I dared with a large chisel. Not a great result. Still not large enough to fit over the splines and this also caused the bolt threads to misalign with the opposite side bolt though-hole. So the saga continues.
I was told by the original owner (older dude) in Greeneville, TN that he bought the bike in 1961 brand new there in Greenville. Of course, no title in hand.

My understanding of the serial numbers 100XXXX thru 103XXXX are late model dreams--The early Dreams had only 6 numbers (pre 1965). I have a 103XXXX titled 1969, I think it is a 1967, I have a 101XXXX titled 1969, I think it is a 1966, I have a 100XXXX titled 1965, I think it is a 1965. They were titled in the year sold new not the year built. I also have 2 parts bikes, no titles 100XXXX and 102XXXX. If your serial number is 102XXXX I will bet your gas tank has a rib on top, early Dreams did not. Your motor # and frame # reflect that the motor came on the bike. I still think it is a 1966 or 1967. The only difference in all 3 of mine is the 1965 (100XXXX) the side cover on kick starter side has a place for the clutch cable. On the 101XXXX and the 103XXXX the clutch cable goes right into the motor. All 3 bikes have new clutch plates and the baskets were all the same.

You are mistaken. Honda moving to a seven digit VIN from a six digit VIN in 1965 has nothing to do with the Early Dream Touring vs Late Dream Touring description. That differentiation happened either at the end of 1962 or very early 1963, I wouldn't know without checking my books. Early Dreams had the larger, seamless top tanks with the cas cap in he center, seat, different handlebars with the reel type throttle and crescent shaped rear fender brackets. Those are the main visual differences. The top seam gas tank with corresponding seat change, internal spiral throttle and fender strut change happened in 1963.

Tom, I was aware of the handle bars, throttle, and struts but I thought the change was 1964. Thanks for the info. Never to old to learn.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I had to go do my real life for a minute. I will take a picture of the most recent shift lever that arrived and that I heated with torch and opened up the spline gap almost .100" but it still doesn't fit. WTF? I'll get a pic on here soon, plus a pic of the bike and the gas tank for those that want to see it. Thanks again.
