'65 CA77 Dream is Electrical Nightmare.... Ugk.

Post by jshell » Wed Jan 23, 2008 4:34 am

Hello -
I just picked up a 65 CA77. Turns out, I think it was victim of a vulture that has managed to get away with most of the electrical system. So I'm in the process of replacing everything - the rectifier, the condensor (there's one there, but it's lookin rough), the entire harness... whole kit 'n caboodle.
So here's my question - keep in mind that keeping original parts is not at all my concern -
What can I modify/make to complete my system? I've seen the posts regarding the RadioShack rectifier, as well as a coil from JC Whitney. I've got a source for a condensor and point set... so that leaves me with the harness as a whole. If I just make it according to the diagram, is anyone seeing any issues here? Am I completely missing a fault that will make this project not work?
Or, how about any tips?
Thanks in advance guys - I fell in love with these Dreams, and I'm just itching to get her on the road. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
-Justin

The most important thing to keep stock, is the Combination switch. The out-put of the charging system is controled by weather or not you are running the lights. I have never had a Dream, mine is a superhawk, but they are similar. The charging system works fine, as long as you follow the diagram to the tee. One time, I road mine with a burned out headlight, the switch was on, and in a short ride, I cooked the battery, big time! As soon as I figured out the problem, and turned off the headlight switch, I returned home, not overcharging. Good luck on your new project, Dave

Thanks, SuperChicken. Good to know - that was the one thing in the whole system that I didn't really know how to replace. Does anyone know a source for a a new combo switch? Or a good replacement?
Hell, what does it look like, anyway?
Thanks
