I've replace the tires on my 1964 CA77, cleaned out the inside of the hubs, sanded them-cleaned off the shoes and sanded them too.

Everything works fine (brake cable, shoes expand, etc.) and the shoes are in great shape, but my motorcycle just won't stop.

Does anyone have any suggestions???

Not to ask the obvious but do you have the nut on the end of the brake rod screwed in far enough?

You say you sanded the shoes but with what. Are the shoes real smooth....sort of glazed over... or are the "rough" as new shoes would be

The nut on the brake rod seems to have a sweet spot. My rear brakes weren't any good at all. I adjusted that nut in pretty tight and they are awesome now.

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses!

Yes, I think so-I will double check tonight. I know the bottom of the nut (part 25) is almost to the halfway point of the threaded part of the rod. Does that seem okay?

The shoe's seemed almost brand new! there was just a lot of powder,dirt, grime that needed to be cleaned/sanded out.

I used fine bit sandpaper to go over the shoes, but it really didn't need to be sanded too much because they weren't really glazed over.

I've ordered NOS shoes from Ohio Cycle and they look and feel pretty much exactly like the ones that were already in the bike.

I will look for the sweet spot tonight and install the new shoes, I will keep you all posted.

I asked a friend to bring over his double lead front brake plate from an old yamaha to see if we can rig that up if all else fails.

You will figure it out. Get the rear wheel off the ground. Adjust the nut in until it will no longer turn with the brake applied. If you never do then you know something isn't right.

I have read that the adhesive that holds the pads on the shoe can fail over time on some old brake models causing them to slip and lock up.

The 64 Dream I am working on hasn't been on the road for 30 years .

Should I replace all the pads as a precaution or if they work just clean them up and ride?
