I have read all the posts on the charging system. The "stator" appears to be referred to as the magneto or dynamo.

As best as I can tell is is actually an alternator with a stator and rotating magnets on the crankshaft. This would mean that it should output AC voltage to a rectifier which converts to VDC. Apparently there is no voltage regulator but supplied voltage to the battery is controlled by activating various windings in the stator (via the ignition switch) .

If so, it would seem possible to use a rectifier/regulator and run the alternator at full potential all the time. Anyone know the potential AC output of the alternator in AC volts?

Don,
The potential output of the AC generator is primarily a factor of engine rpm's. To achieve maximum output all the time your engine rpm's would have to be about 4,000 or so all the time.

The OEM rectifier is under the right side cover. Retrobikes in Port Angeles WA sells a modern replacement that nets an improved output and looks similar to the original. Or you can go to Radio Shack. Search this site. There is a lot of discussion on what to use and how to install it.

Not much draw (brake light periodically) until you turn on the headlight and that kicks in the higher output winding.

Actually I was thinking more about the Mosfet Rectifier/Regulator - here is the site-

This is a very efficient regulator/rectifier and would solve the charging problem on the Dream. You could run full AC voltage all the time.

However no one answered my question - What is the maximum AC voltage output from the Dream alternator

You could also use a zener diode, mounted on a heat sink, to regulate the voltage. Brit bikes used them for decades.

Don,

Maybe the best approach here is to ask you what the charging problem on the Dream is. It would be easy enough then to understand why the MOSFET rectifier/regulator may or will not be your solution.
