Another New GuyAnother New GuyHey Guys,
Another noob! I recently purchased a 1966 305 Dream, it needs a very little work (I hope!), it's all there and mostly clean. My motorcycle experience to this point had been with the little Honda C70 Passports, more motorbike than motorcycle. First area of concern is the title, it's out of state and the VIN on the title starts with CA77, the VIN on the frame starts with CA78. The other digits match. I called our DMV office and was told I'd have to trailer the bike in to their office (can't get a tag without a title) and have one of their field imnspectors take a look at it. So I buy a motorcycle, find out the next thing I need is a trailer. Go figure... Wish me luck guys. Ray VINRainman,
I think P is right. Start by transferring the title. There is no such thing as a CA77 with a 7-digit VIN number, so its not like you are dealing with a title for a different bike. Alot of people refer to all 305 Dreams as "CA77's", apparently even the dealer who sold it. There is a way to get this straightened out, but it would likely be easier after the title you have is in your name. Thanks for the responses.
Unfortunately Florida requires a law enforcement officer or notary public verify the Title and Vehicle VINs match before they will provide a Florida title for an out of state vehicle. I did a little research and found out you can rent a uhaul motorcycle trailer for a very reasonable price, less than $20.00. I have a Toyota pickup, I did think about trying to get the bike in the bed but I don't think I can go wrong with the uhaul for that price. Title IssueRainman,
When you go to DMV you want to have as much documentation as you can to support your position that what you have is an inadvertently-placed, wrong digit in the title. The problem is there is not as much good documentation from Honda as one would wish. Probably the strongest thing you could take is the page from Honda Parts manuals that show the various years and corresponding frame and engine numbers (pasted below). As I said, there is no such thing as a CA77 with a 7-digit sequence frame number. The frame number should be on your title. The change from CA77 to CA78 occurred in mid-1963, though there is not really any good documentation from Honda on that. I think everyone would agree that it had occurred by 1964. I have photos of a dozen 1963 CA78, including frame and engine numbers and have spent a lot of time investigating the issue. All pre-1965 bikes have either 5 or 6 digit frame numbers, whether CA77 or CA78. For 1964 CA78's the 6-digit sequence number can start with either "1" or "4". All CA78 frame number bikes have CA77E engine numbers. There are more clues that can be found in parts manuals, but just know that Honda literature is not very good for Dream 305's. If you run into any issues as you are going through the process let the folks on this site know and you are almost certain to get the help you need. Best advice: get started soon as you don't know how long it will take. When you get your coil and condenser fixed you will want to ride as soon as you can.
