Different sized battery trays??

Post by sidehack » Tue Jan 06, 2009 7:47 pm

I'm gonna probably show some big time ignorance here, but here goes. I have 2 CA78s, previously identified as '65s. I have one apart and one still together. While welding up a horrible rear fender crack today I noticed that my straps on the battery tray were broken and seemed to be out of shape. When I went to the other bike to take some measurements, I realized that one battery tray is about 2 inches longer than the other and is welded in a different location on the frame. Anybody have any insight into this? BTW, both trays appear to be original as far as spot welds, bends etc. Just wondering.....

Thanks, that makes some sense. I know that the short battery tray is perfect for a 12N9A3, and that battery really slops around in the larger tray.

Hope you don't mind if I jump in on this post. I have a '66 Dream that somewhere along the line someone tried to put the large battery in the small tray. They cut up the tray and the slot that holds the cover on the bottom is gone. Anyone have a battery box for the small battery they would like to sell. Even a rough one will work if it has the slot for the outer cover
Thanks Dave
