Steering Damper Rubber Boot

Post by FreeRadical » Tue Aug 28, 2018 4:35 pm

I just purchased a new rubber boot for my steering damper. Do I have to disassemble the damper or has anyone had success slipping it over one of the ends? If it needs to be disassembled, how does one go about doing this? There looks to be a set screw on the moving end, but it is very stuck.

The damper is in good working condition otherwise.

From memory, the top aluminium eye screws onto the damper rod with a steel locking nut keeping it in place.

you need to get these off them slide the new boot over the rod before replacing the eye and locking nut.

The later incorporates a rib on which the boot actually locates so once the eye and lock nut are in place you should be able to slide the boot onto the locking nut/ring.

Sorry if I've not explained it very well but that's about how it works.

Thanks for the response. Now to figure out how to remove the screw! It's really stuck and starting to lose it's head from me trying to get it out. I may have to drill it out...carefully!!!
