Running rich on one side only?

Post by thepunisher2007 » Wed May 31, 2017 3:49 pm

Hi guys. Finally got my cl77 running and out on the road for testing. All runs and sounds great. However...

Left side plug gets quite sooty after a few miles of riding. Right side is fine. Both carbs are set the same correct jets and needle position etc... it's had new rings cam timing are right and the valve gaps and points gaps are all set. Should I adjust the needle hight on that side alone or would having them differ be a problem.

Any help or guidance on which bits to check and most likely culprit would be great

A friend had a similar problem recently with his newly rebuilt CL72.

When checking his carbs he found that the two needles, despite both being genuine Keihin parts and carrying the same number were quite different in that one was much shorter than the other. Assembling the carbs individually this wasn't that obvious but the 'short' needle was causing one cylinder to run VERY rich indeed as it was approx 8mm shorter than it should have been! Once he had two 'correct' needles fitted the bike ran fine

Might be worth checking your bke in case there's a batch of faulty needles out there.

That's interesting. The needles in my CL72 carbs are much shorter than any others I have.

I used he clymeres Manuel and set as per the instructions. Off the top on my head I can't remember the gap distance but it was checked and double checked to ensure it was as per instuctions. I suppose it's possible that after the first run something may have moved so I'll. check that again

The needles Are defiantly the same. I use vernier when installing and measured ever point of the needles to ensure the where the same the narrowest point of the needle.

My I suggest you go to the FAQ section then read How I Tune and you may be surprised how it runs then. .................lm
