petcock seal

Post by blazesjake » Sat Jul 23, 2016 8:48 pm

So, I'm familiar with old bikes and this type of petcock construction, but I am having difficulty getting my petcock to shut off properly. It slowly drips gas into the carbs then of course out the overflow. I bought a new kit from Kevin Hahn ( Scrambler cycle), lapped the surface of the rotating valve with 600 grit on plate glass, and recently installed two of the beleville style washer springs to increase seal force. Haven't had luck yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Time to check out the petcock body for defects. I have found a few that were corroded through in the fuel passages. No way to stop the flow on those.

whether your petcock is on or off, you should not have fuel coming out the carb overflow. there is where your problem lies. petcock is probably working just fine.
Good luck

You first statement is correct.
Your second relates to a valve downstream from a LEAKY petcock.

Leaky fuel cock

I went round and round with this same issue. Something wrong in the shut off valve. New washer, rubber packing, fine sanded the back side of the lever and it still leaked. Gas on the garage floor and puddled in the top cover had to stop. In frustration, I opted for what I call two bull nut inline shut off valves. Not too visible, and it took care of the overflowing carbs. Of course it's not OEM, but like I said...it works.

You may have gas leaking into the petcock at the tank-screws. I use a half-slice of a grommet for a better seal.
