Triple tree/ fork tubes

Post by GTC » Sat Feb 27, 2016 9:25 pm

Can anyone tell me the best way to get the fork tubes reset in the triple tree without chipping the new paint on the triple tree?

I use wide masking tape on each side of the 'hole' and then cut-out the centers to preserve the paint at the edges. Then I use a flapper-disk to sand the holes smooth and remove any residue paint. Then apply tape to the split-area and drive a healthy wedge in (my fat screwdriver) so the tubes fit without a struggle. Then mount the ears but do not snug the top-tree until the tubes are in far enough to align everything. I have used long bolts with the same threads and spacers to help pull the tubes home. Since the upper portions of the tubes are tapered, they usually start easy. Be sure to clean (smooth) the original tubes and twist them as you slide them into place. When the top tree is aligned and the cap-bolts are snug........check the bearing-play and tighten the top stem-nut. Now remove the cap-bolts and install the fork-oil.

Tip.......I always mount the tubes 'dry' to be sure there is no lubrication between the lower tree and the tubes. When the tubes are just below the top tree, I spray old wax inside of the ears to help preserve them for the next builder.
