Vin / Engine # id help

Post by STJ » Sat Oct 31, 2015 8:14 pm

Starting to work on my CL77 that I found laying under a mobile home a few years ago while working as a mail carrier.
Engine in on the bench and top end is off and ready to move on.

I would like to find out a little more about it from the numbers as to the year and anything else they will tell me.

I have found a few vin # decoders that didn't help. I am hoping some one can send me in the correct direction.

Vin on frame is "CL 77 1056895"
Engine number is "CL 77E 1057253
The tail light has a 67 on it, at least on some of the cars of that era that was a good indicator, but I am not sure if Honda changer tail light design every year like the cars did.

The numbers are for a late model CL77. They stopped making them in '67.

Check the wiring loom under the gas tank. There is usually a white tag which includes the data that the harness was made. A pretty good guide.

Please post some pictures when you can

Chrome fenders were on late 67's, painted fenders on early 67's. Oval tail lights on all 67's. As G man said that was the last production year. Harness tag should be just above the right side cover.

This bike would have come with chrome fenders. Not all '67's had oval tail light, they were installed at CL77-1043098. Candy Orange and Candy Blue along with Silver were color options for tank and side covers. Standardized small passenger pegs, cable adjusters, perches and levers. Gator clamps were omitted, rear exhaust guard was lengthened with an extra mount added to the lower pipe, seamed gas tank w/o cross over. Lots of changes were made in '67, these are a few of the obvious cosmetic ones this VIN would have had. Engine internals would have all the shallow splines on the cams, crank, and transmission. You would need to verify what you have before sourcing parts. In 50 yrs who knows what has been done to these, I for example dropped a complete trans from a late CL77 into a '63 CL72 only to realize the CL72 clutch hub and counter sprocket would not fit. The fellow that now owns the bike was made aware of this but when it's passed on to the next owner I doubt the info will be passed on.

I need to go learn now to do photos on this forum. The bike has chrome fenders a sealed non forever silver tank, oval tail light, there id tag on the wiring is missing. Rubber main foot pegs.
What is a good resource for gaskets, pistons and rings. I need a few things to finish it but need to get it running first. I don't think this will ever be a concourse bike but a fun bike to ride.

The candy tanks and chrome fenders came long after the oval tail light. Early 67 production bikes had painted fenders and oval tail light. Mine is 9# past the spline change. I'm in Mobile not far from you.

At what number did they make the spline change?
