Scramblers Owners Poll-Mufflers or Not?

Post by lifewithoutparole » Sat Apr 30, 2011 11:42 am

Hi, Tim here from Ormond Beach fl. I recently bought a CL77 and will be getting it on the road in the next month. It came with the factory muffler in place. I have searched the forum (fabulous place BTW) researching carb jetting with straight pipes and have found lots of good info. However, I can't find where someone here ever conducted a poll to see how many run straight pipes only versus pipes with the factory muffler. When I was a kid in the mid 60's and had my 1st S90, there were several 250/305 scramblers in town..seems most of them ran straight pipes IIRC. My question to everyone is: "Why/why not straight pipes?" Too much noise for the neighbors? for the rider? for the police? (my fave). So, scrambler owners, when you have a chance, let me know. Thanks, Tim

Tim, I have ran my 66 CL both ways, with/without, muffler. In my case with stock jetting and filters it seems to pull cleaner/smoother with the muffler in place.........................D

like any other engine, the 305 will run smoother with a muffler installed. that's the way I run my CL77.

I run mine with the muffler. Too loud without, runs better with.

Are we talking pipes with diffusers (baffles) and muffler compared with straight through? I was hoping to run my pipes with baffles but no muffler. I hate the look of that thing.

The CL72 baffles work well for quiting the bike down, and making it run well. I have the baffles that I think I got from you in my street tracker, and they seem to work pretty well also.

I've tried all three configurations of exhausts recently and ended up with insert baffles in scrambler pipes without the 2 into 1 muffler for the following reasons;
I don't care for the look or sound of the 2 into 1 muffler and it seems to have too much back pressure.
Straight pipes have a great sound but are too loud for city use and I think the engine needs a little back pressure.
My choice: the insert baffles in scrambler pipes because they can be cut down to help tune the engine and keep that great 305 scrambler sound.
