Restoring my 2nd CL77 after 20 years and 305 story.

Found me a tired but for the most part complete 1967 Honda Cl77 a couple of months ago.
Plans are to change the frame colour from black to red and completely restore it to
show like appearance. Just dropped off the items that I have always liked chromed at plating shop, headlight fork connectors, side stand, engine cover, and skid plate. So much fun to work on this bike. Will post pics on completion.

Now for my question:
About 20 years ago I restored a 67 Honda CL77 and it was a looker. Even 20 years ago I would get stopped and folks would ask questions and tell me their stories about their long gone 305.

Anyways, I remember taking a ride out in the country on this bike when on a long winding road, I got passed by a then modern Honda Magna 750. So I thought to myself, why not? I started chasing the 750 and was catching him when all of a sudden, the rear wheel locked up! There I was going down the highway at 60 miles an hour with the rear wheel locked. I was lucky I did not lose it. Pulled over the the side, checked the bike over and saw no leaks or broken parts. I attempted to kick start it and nothing, but I did hear a changling inside the motor. After 10 minutes the old 305 did start, with a metalic noise inside and I was able to ride it back 25 miles to my house. I later took the bottom part of the motor off and did not see anything unusual, slapped it back to gether and until I traded the bike in on a 79 CBX, the 305 always had that noise inside the motor.

Any mechanics out there venure to guess what could have gone wrong?

I never figured it out. and "no" the 750 never did stop to assist.

Did pulling the clutch in free up the rear wheel?

If not maybe small rock kicked up between chain and sprocket?

Ya have described the "pistons seized to the sleeves" syndrome. ................lm

once the bike cooled down the pistons freed up?

coulda been lack of oil. bad oil. old oil.
coulda been too hot of a day for that CL (not geared for highway riding but for dessert racing) and the high RPMs and heat got to the ol bike, even with good oil.

as for th noise? maybe it was the CL telling ya to buy a CB if ya wanted to be running around at 65mph :P

Seems like a common occurrence when everything is correct with these bikes.

Sounds like that is probably what happened then.
Though if I remember correctly, the engine was not siezed
on pulling over. Sure am glad that the old girl started however,
those were the days prior to cell phones, so I would have been thumbing it back.

Guess the golden memories of our vintage bikes from days gone by are sometimes greater than what the bikes were actually capable of.

For those familer with Central Texas roads this happend on the way back to San Antonio from
Bandera Tx. A very popular place to ride bikes to, having breakfast at the old
Spanish Trail restaurant, and viewing the Texas Hill country scenery getting there on those long winding roads is fantastic! Every biker needs to check that box once in their life!
