Shocks
ShocksHi,
I was tearing apart my shocks yesterday and have the shrouds taken off but when you get the bottom chrome shroud off and the black top shroud off, how do you separate the bottom chrome part from the piston so you can get it chromed? Is it pressed on and if so, once you take it apart how do you reattach it? Also, if you have dings in your upper or lower portion shrouds near the top of them, what is the best way to get those dings out? Are there aftermarket shocks out there or a website for something pretty similiar? Thanks, any help is appreciated.
The top eye is aluminium. The bottom part (the damper body) is steel on genuine shocks. On very early shocks the aluminium part was screwed to the damper rod but I think that they are cast onto the rod on later ones.
The actual damper / rod is crimped or swayed together so it's not an easy job getting them apart. There is a guy in England who offers to refurb early Honda shocks. I need to do the same job myself so I'll report back if I find anything out. The more experienced guys on this forum will put us right hopefully. G '60 C77 '60 C72 '62 C72 Dream '63 CL72
