1968 CL-77 with a CB-77E mtr#, normal?
1968 CL-77 with a CB-77E mtr#, normal?I have a 1968 CL-77 Honda Scrambler. I believe the "year" model of 1968 to be accurate as it has chrome front/rear fenders and the tank & side covers are painted "candy orange" as listed in the big Honda MC Identification guide. <br /><br /> While doing some minor R&R work yesterday I noticed for the first time that the engine # is a CB-77E! I'm sure a stock engine should be a #CL-77. <br /><br />My question is this - as the 1968's were end-of-the-run for the 305 Hondas did Honda ever put any CB-77E engines in the last of the CL-77 frames?? Or is it more likely that a prior owner of my bike transplant a CB-77 engine into a CL frame? Everything looks stock & accurate on this bike other than the "CB" engine #.<br /><br />Bill Gray, Lexington, Michigan

The CB77E engine number (CB77E-1043366) is 21,268 lower than the frame number. <br /><br />- (by contrast my "1969" Dream's engine number is 4,933 lower than the frame number, my 1966 Dream's engine number is 14 lower than the frame number, my mid-60's SuperHawk's engine number is 39 higher than the frame number) -<br /><br />And no there is NOT a tach on this 305 scrambler - just a speedometer & odometer in the black headlight nacel, there is a small blue light (I believe the high beam indicator) located at about 2-o'clock on the headlight housing just behind the chrome headlight rim.<br /><br />I'm guessing that based upon the "huge" difference in engine & frame numbers that an after-the-fact engine transplant was done at some point after this CL77 frame left the factory??<br /><br />Thanks<br /><br />Bill
