Assembly Lube.......its pinkish-red. I use what NAPA sells........but ........if you doing a full assembly in one day, I use a squirt-can of 30w Detergent oil and apply liberally while rotating all shafts in journals.

Among all of the things to prepare..........

When you assemble the pistons and rings, did you have proper end-gaps? Hopefully you sent the pistons along with the barrels for proper bore clearance (at the skirts) and the pistons are marked for each cylinder. Are your chain tensioners in good shape? Did you clean the oil-filter? Do you have the correct dowels in good shape? Did you check the shifter-drum and forks for wear.....burrs? Shuffle the clutch-pack and pre-soak with oil?

Don't be shy about questions............several watchers have experience. Good Luck!

OldScrambler...Yes should have mentioned that I included the pistons with the block / new sleeve to ensure accuracy. Will be checking throughout the list provided as I am in re-assembly mode and will not hesitate to ask questions as I'm sure I will have a few. Hoping Bill Silver's resto guide will lead me along smoothly in the reassembly.

So unfortunately money is still kind of tight and was advised that I get new valves before rebuilding the engine. On the upside, my good friend just moved into our house and I've been helping move his motorcycle shop from the storage shed he was working out of and into our garage! He is my age (28) and a Yamaha purist owning a pristine '78 xs650 along with 70's era rt360, dt250, and xs400. Part of me is holding off until we get the shop completely set up (which a bulk of it will be done by this weekend) but in the mean time I have a couple questions...

-When cleaning the internal parts, what solvent would you guys recommend?

-Because of my stuck piston, I had to cut the cam chain with a dremel tool to remove the block, would it be wise to just get a new cam chain or can I use a link connector (not sure of terminology) to provide support for the cut link?

-I will be following Bill Silver's guide religiously but in general, where should I be 'extra' meticulous? (aside from items mentioned in OldScramblers post above)

As always, thanks in advance! :)

Do replace the cam chain.
If your valves can be refaced (intake only) there is no reason the replace them.
Usually the exhaust valves will have a good face so no need to replace them.
Do not cut new face on the exhaust valve as it is treated for hardness and heat.
WHo will do the valve job?. ....................................ln

Was considering taking them to a friend of mine who is a master Honda mechanic with over 20 years experience. I'll post some pictures when I get home.

Will replace the cam chain, thanks for the input LM.

When I took the block to the machine shop to get my cylinders bored, I also had him remove the valves since I did not have the spring compressor tool. Once out, the owner of the machine shop told me that I should get new valves due to the fact that the 'dot' on the face of the valve was showing, indicating it needed to be replaced. Can you guys confirm this for me? Also, how do you go about refacing a valve?

Have you checked the cost for new valves?
I recommend nothing other than HONDA issue.
There are plenty of After Market ones issued on eBay but the metal isn't up the HONDA standards so don't last very long.
"DOT" on valve face.
That's a new one on me.
I use a SIOUX brand machine on the intake face but if I need exhaust I go to my stock of perfect used ones (needed nothing more that refacing the stem) and use them.
I cut the seats with HONDA broaches or if like the one I just finished I had to use the SIOUX brand stones and motor. .................lm

hmm I see. Yes I did notice there is a dot on the face...what it means I am unaware. Will upload a picture when I get home. I was looking on ebay and found these Shin Nippon's, which are the ones I was planning on ordering...

I'd like to avoid the cost of course, but at the same time, I want my bike to be as reliable as possible so I'm kind of torn. I believe these are to Honda spec, correct?
