Hi,

I don't know how to interpret this :
how sacrilegious would it be to go with a Non-Traditional color? Although the red is nice, I was thinking of a lighter blue.
compared with this :
I do want to stay pretty close to original as possible
.

Well, I mentioned the disadvantage of this :
and I'm playing with the idea of changing the case cover bolts to allens.
, and the original bolts are just as expensive / cheap, and so much more style and classic.

The points ignition works fine, maybe change it later, you'll need the money for more important things, same for the charging system, but a cheap and efficient upgrade is a modern full bridge rectifier, use the search function for more info.

So quick list of questions;

a) how sacrilegious would it be to go with a Non-Traditional color? Although the red is nice, I was thinking of a lighter blue.
b) I really like the early foot pegs, the non-folding ones. Will they bolt onto my frame and um, would this be "sacrilegious" as well?
c) does anyone have a pair of non-dented fork ears they'd be willing to sell?

I do want to stay pretty close to original as possible but I am planning on up dating to an modern ignition system, update the charginging system, and I'm playing with the idea of changing the case cover bolts to allens.

I'd really love to hear your opinons, please.

Thanks,

Joel
Joel, you'll feel compelled to keep going back to it!

See jleewebb's CB77 resto project; the final job is close to the Dupont Imron blue colour but on the lighter side and it looks bloody lovely!

I'm in agreement with Jensen here; other priorities first -- and the OE systems work fine with a bit of fettling. My charging system works just great, as do those of others here. We'll point you in the right direction(s); just ask or use the Search link on the h305 main site.

Allens look nice. It's a personal preference, really.

G'luck with your decision-making.

Hey Jensen,

I noticed the same thing when I wrote it and went back and added the "pretty close to" part. Meaning I don't want to chop, bob or cafe anything. I want original parts and set up (but maybe) a differant color... Not really sure though... I might stay with the red (although mines black right now)

I remember you writing about the screws, and I'm leaning towards original (heck, I just spent $33 on some J.I.S. screws for the stator cover) but after having had to drill out half of the sidecover screws because the PO had butchered them I can also see the benifts of the allen style. But I really do like the look of the original ones.

Any opinon on the early style non-folding foot pegs?

Joel

And you can spin Allens out and back in with a ⅜"-drive speedbrace and 5mm Allen socket. It makes the removal of the covers much easier.

I also use an electric-driver on those JIS screws that can't be easily changed, but it's essential to use a perfect, Phillips 2-pt bit to avoid damaging the plating. And to be careful of over-torquing/stripping!

Ok, you guys have talked me outta the ignition and charging systems (for now)

Back to the fork ears, I've found a pair of (NOS?) chrome ones on sleazbay for about $100. But I don't want chrome so, I'd have to have it stripped and powder coated. And the price seems a bit steep.

I've also found a few that aren't as dinged up and dented as mine but if I'm replacing and spending the money to get the blasted / powder coated anyway, it's only about $40 more for the nicer pair.

Unless of course anyone on here might have have a pair??? I'll post this in the wanted section as well.

Thanks guys,

Joel

Regarding your headlight brackets (I assume that's what you mean by fork ears) why not fix the ones you have if you are going to powder coat them anyway? Half the fun of bringing a relic back to life is removing some of the damage done to it by others so that when folks see it done, they say, "Wow, that thing looks like new! Cannot believe it avoided being beat up all these years."

Anyone can buy new parts and have somebody else paint them. There is a certain satisfaction in doing the work yourself. Much more actually than just having a nice bike when it's all done.

regards,
Rob

I thought about repairing them myself but have to admit that I have no idea how. Can't use Bondo because of the powder coating. Which means??? Hammering the dents out? I can try but I'm not sure I have the tools. What would I need? Any idea's? I am very willing to try anything.

Joel
