Lever Question

So - just going back to the original question, both levers did match ? Correct :-) I just find it odd that I've seen several flat ended clutch levers, but as yet haven't seen a flat ended brake lever.

Also - looking at the clear (now yellowed of course) coating it covers the ball end which from a manufacturing perspective lakes sense as it would just have been dipped, but also makes me wonder if it ever had a black rubber end at all as there is no line to be seen under a magnifying glass at all. The ball is 21mm in diameter - the brake lever ball is a tad over 19mm. Any idea how big the lever ball using the the rubber cover was ?

PS: I find WD40 is good for helping to slide on rubber covers and sleeves- I use it when resleeving wire harnesses for example.

Yes they both matched.

Probaby see more replacement levers on the clutch side because that's the side that smacks the ground when the bike falls off the stand.

My levers had both the clear plastic and rubber ends.

Thanks Rob - appreciated. And of course after I made that post I did happen across a flat ended right side lever on fleabay. Murphy's Law I suppose :-). Also, looking through the parts listings there do appear to be several different black rubber covers, most probably of differing sizes. I suppose the ones I need are 53180-028-670. I'll keep looking.

That is the correct part number. I found three of them in stock at an old honda dealer in Washington. They all seemed to be in good shape but it was plain to see it was going to be hard as reverse birth. Lever too big rubber too small. I sold the ones I had (maybe to snakeoil) a while back. Maybe its time form someone to reproduce them.

Word of caution if you buy repop levers with the rubber ends. I bought a set of repops last winter from a reputable source. Decided to replace both levers so they would look right. My bike fell off the stand the summer before and broken the original clutch lever (grrrrrrrrr....)

Anyway, I grabbed a handful of brake as I was taking the bike off the lift and the new lever snapped like a piece of glass, and leaving and edge about as sharp. If my hand had been in a different position or this had happened on the street, the results would have been a severly lacerated finger(s) and perhaps a crumpled bike and rider. Based on that, I will always try to by original levers for these bikes.

This is likely old news to many people, but I did manage to locate one NOS 53180-028-670 end rubber, and was curious as to how it compared to the ones still available under part number 95010-16001. Big difference ! The old one is a lot bigger and also quite thick at the ball end. I had thought maybe I would be able to stretch one of the new ones over the end of the old lever, but there is no way that will work, and looking at it, I'm not even sure how easy it would be to make a copy.

Has anyone tried to have reproductions made ? I've included a photo below.

Reading this made me think about trying that liquid coating material intended to replace the insulated coating on metal tool handles.
I've seen it in places like Home Depot's tool section.... never tried it or know if it comes in black but it might be an option.
