I received my new early model headlight from Retro Bikes yesterday. I am a little disappointed in that the lens is cloudy on the inside. It is made in Japan, but not a Stanley. I will talk to them about this. But then again for $12 I guess I can't expect perfection.

I tried to fit that version into my later model rim. You can get it to snap past the mounting ears in the rim, but once in the rim it will not index properly because the one of the little tabs on the light hit against the top ear on the rim. I suppose you could cut that little tab off and then use the spring clips, but since I have a new rim coming, I won't do that.

I'm not done with this yet. I do plan to attemp a mod to the original reflector to take a replacement bulb. Can't do that until I have the old style headlight set up in the bike.

regards,
Rob

Had an interesting thing happen to me today regarding this headlight issue. The outfit that said they had the rim for the older version, later cancelled the order saying not available.

So, I called my go-to vintage dealer, Western Hills. They were supposed to call me back, but never did. So I called them today and they said they had the rim and it was $42.99. Honda list is $26.95. So, I called a few other dealers and found a dealer that just sold their last one to Western Hills this morning. He would have sold it to me for Honda list.

I truly hope that Western Hills is not planning on gouging vintage bike owners. I'm going to call them back to see if they perhaps looked up the wrong part number and gave me the wrong price.

Stay tuned...

regards,
Rob

Just talked to the parts counter at Western Hills. When I told them they were almost double the list price he said he did not care. The owner sets the price based on the bike being the most restored Honda out there.

So, unfortunately, it looks like Western Hills is planning on sticking it to all the CL77 owners when it comes to replacment parts prices.

I'm sorry to have to report this.

Caveat Emptor

Rob
