305 scrambler running too lean

I wanted to thank you for the CL77 carb revision suggestions. I finally got around to doing them today on my recently restored 1965, and what a difference! No more prolonged warmup, coughing, spitting, stumbling, etc. It started easily, I was able to open the choke after a minute or 2, it purred like a kitte and pulled strongly away in first gear. How did you happen to come up with this modification? It's like magic! --Randall

Thanks for asking.
I got tired of the CL77 engines having the COLD START problems which the CB77 engines didn't.
I'm aware that HONDA used the CL77 carb parts due to the difference in the exhaust pulse caused by the long streight pipes rather than the head pipes and muffler of the CB77.
Well I tried the CB77 kit in a fresh rebuildt CL77 bike and it was as near perfect as it could be.
Now I rebuild all the CB77 and CL77 carbs with the larger jets and shorter fat needle and they work just fine. .............lm

Today I went for a longer ride on my 1965 CL77 (maybe 25 milkes on a total engine rebuild) after doing the CB77 carb needle swap. Everything was fine until I got to 3/4 throttle in 2nd gear, then the engine began running very poorly with no power. When I backed off the throttle slightly, it ran fine. Without a tach, it's tough to say at what engine speed this is occurring, but it's in the upper range. The plugs looked OK upon returning home. What do you think is going on here? I can't really blame this on the carb revision, since I never tried opening the throttle to this degree prior to this. --Randall

Thanks for your reply. Before calling, I checked over all the usual things and found that the right set of points was slightly retarded. After fixing that and doing another road test, the engine problem completely disappeared. Of course I also opened the fuel tank cap before the test, so I'm not entirely sure the problem was the timing. Anyway, it's working fine now. Thanks again for the help. --Randall
