CL77 scrambler clutch problems

Post by ChromeSuperhawk » Tue Apr 05, 2016 8:56 pm

I have a cl77 scrambler 305 from I believe 1967-68. The problem I'm having is that when trying to kick it over the clutch seems to disengage the kick starter. Then if you put the bike in first or second and try kicking it over the back wheel wants to turn, but when the clutch is squeezed the wheel continues to spin, like it's not disengaging. I've adjusted the clutch adjustments cable and cover, according to the manual. I've had both engine side covers off to check the clutch for sticking, the push rods not bent. The bearing is in the clutch pivot and all is well greased. I also just installed a new NOS OEM clutch cable to ensure length. I really would like to avoid splitting the case if at all possible. If anyone has any ideas on where to start for diagnosing this problem or experienced it, all advice/ideas would be much appreciated.

Loudmouse,

Thanks for the offer to call, but before I was gonna give you a call I wanted to make sure I could accurately describe what was happening. Well, I put the bike in second gear and attempted to spin the rear wheel, clutch grabs like it should. Then I squeezed the clutch and it would sort of release. Took a little bit of effort to spin the wheel, but it did spin easier. The compression plate would be pushed out, so there was a gap on one side or the other, of the plates. But,now with the bike in neutral and kicking it over (with clutch side, side cover off) and watching the plates while kick starting. The plates grab and sort of slip in a way, grab, let go and slip/slide. After thinking, could this be possibly worn/compressed clutch springs not applying enough pressure to the plates? If that would be your suspicion as well, would you know what length the of the springs would be, for testing them? Possibly could it be the side cover (clutch side) be twisted/warped in some way to cause additional problems? There is a goober of some sort of sealant on the inside of the cover, where on the outside you can see a hairline crack, perhaps when someone dumped it. If any of this doesn't help and you can respond tonight, I can give you a call around 8:45 tomorrow.
