Production Number question

Post by qwerty » Thu May 23, 2013 4:35 pm

Hello,

I'm don't have any paperwork for what I believe is a 1965 CL72. I was told it's makes things easier on the DMV clerk if you can show them some sort of "proof" of the year of you're vehicle and I want to make things as easy as possible. I used the search function, but couldn't find anything that would help. Does anyone have anything they could scan and send me that looks more official than my bill of sale?

Thanks,
Graham in California

'65 CL72?

Someone else step in and correct me if I am wrong here:

1. 7 digit frame numbers starting with "10" began in 1965, but total production for CL72's after that only went to 1009471. Remember that the CL77 was introduced in 1965 and everyone wanted the bigger engine.

2. Al 65-67 production is grouped together in everything I have seen so there is no real way to tell the "year" of the bike.

3. Federal law on VIN numbers kicked in in 1968 which is why your bike has a frame number and not a VIN number. If you have a parts manual you can show the DMV that parts application is not shown by "year" but rather by frame number.

4. Page 4 of Bill Silver's Resto Guide has a chart with the numbers in it. If you have a copy you could show him that. I don't see anything in my Shop Manual, but it is a '63 and wouldn't help you anyway.

5. You would probably be better off going to visit the DMV to see what they will require. They will be less concerned with the year than they are with making sure your bill of sale has a frame number that matches your bike and that the bike doesn't show up on a "stolen" list anywhere. Take everything you have. If they tell you they need something else, it may require a second trip, but as long as your bike is not stolen, they have a way to help you get it titled.

Graham, the bill of sale, application for title, and statement of fact should be all you need at DMV. They will refer you to CHP for VIN verification, then back to DMV for plate and stickers!
