I noticed upon some disassembly that the stator on this bike says cb72. Is that typical? Just one stator for these? Also can anyone tell me what year I have? Vin is cl77 1007393

Looks like a 65,small hubs, steel sliders low VIN #. All rotors are stamped CB72 or CB72 (L) on the CB and CLs.

Well, bad news. I pulled the motor last night. I went into this knowing it was going to need to be gone through, but what I found was appalling. The pistons are now permanently one with the cylinders. The clutch and most of the components in that cover are gone. I can't get in there to replace the jug and the pistons. Kind of a bummer. Thought I had a good starting point, but unless I can find a replacement, she might just be dead where she sits. Bound for an eternity spent in pieces.

Really all you need is the top engine case if you want to keep it a matching # bike. Find a donor motor, or a complete replacement. Craigslist ad, and / or an ad in the parts wanted section of this site. Try to find something local, as there motors are heavy!

So I would have to break open the case and disconnect the connection rods? I can't get the cylinders off cause the pistons are stuck and I am having a dandy of a time splitting the case

Have you attempted to soak the piston surfaces with a strong penatrating oil like Kroil or PBlaster, then firmly tap them with a block of wood and a large hammer? I suspect re-application of the penatrating oil on a daily basis over a week or more would yield results.
