so I would give it a go ... especially if you have access to a sanding disk or belt-sander.
... or let the chrome shop do it ;)

there is chrome Electro plate , and nickle plate. ( latter is greenish looking)
chrome over steel is a hopeless case. chrome is porous. (it lets water pass right through it)
the solution (no pun) is
so we call it triple plate.
1s copper
2nd nickle
last real chrome.

and as poster said, the base finish dictates the results (polishing)
so you think its cheap huh? YMMV

so wait till you try perfect original type (hard to find) wheel rims.
then have to weld up the rust spots then grind them down and polish them.
and triple plate.
then re-lace and true.
after polishing hubs.

$700 a rim is typical.
one down. 1 to go.

we call mine the money pit. but i dont care now , too old.

before blasting (no pun) zinc, may be the owner wants the OEM look.
consider resale value not just cute ness.
not same.

plstkr

I've probably missed you by a couple of months as I don't visit very often....but I could have/can help you define what is zinc - here is a photo of my zinc I had re-plated for my 1965 CL77 restore.

Best Regards, Gordon
