broken off key in ignition..help?

Welcome to the forum,

I'm just down the road from you (in the big house). Fast Fred and a few others are in the hood. Give a holler (PM) if you need some helping hands (I can probably get a 24 hour pass). I also have a fairly decent home machine shop.

Heres one..so that key number i found..did Honda just issue a key that was cut to that number? Im confused as people have said they have that key but do i have to get it cut? Or did all Honda keys work? (Kinda makes no sense..but seems too many thieves in todays society as compared to the 60s i guess?) Sad..anyways..thanks guys!

Honda issued keys cut to the number on the lock. They also had blanks, and a tool where you dialed in the lock code, and it would cut the blank to those numbers.

I never saw a Honda key cutter but the Honda dealer I worked for had a Curtis Key Corp. key cutter and I personally wore it out cutting keys back in the day. Basicly the first letter and/or number on the lock would identify the key blank and the next numbers were basicly cut depths for the teeth on the key. Most of the keys back in the 60's and 70's had three cuts later Honda went to five and six cut double sided keys and today like fourteen all to make them harder to pick.

The Honda key cutter was very cool. Litterally had two dials and a pair of handles that were squeezed together after code and blank were installed.

Believe it or not, I took my CL77 key down to Lowes just on a chance they could make a key. I had it in my pocket actually while I was running an errand with the bike. The woman took my key, searced thru her blanks and found one. Stuck in her idiot-proof machine and cut a key. It works like a champ.

So, if you are in a pinch for a spare and have a good key, don't be afraid to try Lowe's.
