Need engine casing with # close to CL77-1002758Need engine casing with # close to CL77-1002758Am doing a museum quality restoration on an early Type I, small hub, CL77 with the above frame serial #. The motor is also from an early Type I CL77 but the numbers are several hundred off from the frame #. Am trying to locate an engine casing with a serial # that is closer to the frame #. Something in the range of CL77E-1002758 to CL77E-1002958 would be really helpful. Anyone know where I can locate such a casing? Thanks! Dave
Need an engine casing with a # close to frame # CL77-1002758D, thanks for the caution. In this case I know that the engine did not come with the frame as the engine that came with it had a broken casing. The engine that I have is a good match to the bike in that it is also has a serial number that places it in the early Type I small hub CL77 series but if I can get a top casing with a # closer to the frame number I will be better off as to having a "numbers matching" bike.
In your shoes, I would ensure that the original upper casing is destroyed (cut out the stamped casting area and keep it), machine out, with a Dremel router attachment, the existing number of your now-in-use upper crankcase and stamp your old number into the casing yourself. Metal stamping punches aren't expensive, it's already your number (so you're not trying to hide its identity) and it's a lot less work than a casing swap-out!
Don't forget to photograph the current, undamaged casing and keep it safe as proof that it, too, is yours.
