CL77 Wheel RimsCL77 Wheel RimsJust pondering what to do with my wheel rims. What's do folks do when restoring these bikes? Do you keep the flanged DID rims and get them re-chromed or just get some aftermarket rims? I would like to keep them but mine are rough and could be expensive to re-chrome.
Options for the same price (in UK) seems to be Akront style flanged alloy or a set of stainless (non-flanged) with stainless spokes. I want to ride the bike and they are very rare in the UK. Just interested to know what solutions the experts on this forum have come up with. G-man, I don't know what the options are in the UK. One can paint the rusted center groove with silver paint for a rider. I've also seen non flanged rims used, but they just don't look right. The best option, in my opinion, would be aluminum Akront shouldered rims. They are quite a bit lighter than the steel rims, therefore reducing unsprung, rotational weight for better performance and handling. It won't be " correct", but they do look great!

Thanks, my existing rims are quite rough with large areas of chrome flaking off (rear). The front one could survive with a little paint. Those rims are incredibly heavy. I'm erring toward the Akront style at the moment. We have Central Wheel Components in the UK - who I've used before for some fancy gold anodised rims. G-Man Davomoto
Photo did't attach last time. Cannot remember what make these rims were but they were good quality alloy and very light. http://www.central-wheel.co.uk/rims/rims.html Graham Beautiful bike! I recently did a set of CB77 wheels using excel shouldered rims. They're 200.00 a piece, and then another 100.00 each for stainless spokes and nipples. Here's a link to rims on Buchanans' site . They also have other styles, check them out for ideas.
http://www.buchananspokes.net/products/ ... m_rims.asp davomoto I'm a traditionalist, always prefering to restore original parts rather than replacing them. Later owners will appreciate your efforts to maintain originality. You could rechrome the original rims for certainly no more than what new, incorrect ones will cost. At the same time, re-plate those original spokes and nipples. Zinc for the spokes is cheap, but it soon degrades. I like nickel, which is quite durable and not flashy like chrome. --Randall
