New to the forum, could use adviceHello all,
I have had my CB77 for years now, just never had the time and money to pay attention to it. I now have both so am diving back in. I had a bunch of issues with the ignition system so I bought the electronic ignition listed on the main site and am running 3ohm dyna coils. Last night I tried to fire the bike up. I could get it running, but even after 2 or three minutes of me using partial throttle and various choke combinations, it will not idle on its own. On my last attempt, the bike backfired and now I cant get it to even try and start. I have spark on both sides, and it smells like fuel is making it to the engine. I am going to pick up a new set of plugs today and a compression tester. What compression should these bikes be running at? Any other advice would be appreciated. Also, the overflows on the carbs are randomly leaking. I really dont have that much experience with carburation. I know that probably means that the floats need to be set but how does one go about that? Thanks in advance, and thanks for your patience CarbsSounds like your carbs need to be cleaned. The idle jet on the carbs has an itty bitty hole in it and when it plugs up, it probably won't unplug without some mechanical help. I have used a .010 guitar string to unplug them. Be gentle. Its brass.
It could be gunked up needle valve causing the carbs to leak. Or possibly your float has a hole in it. If you look on this site there is info on setting your floats. Likely that your carbs need a good cleaning anyway after sitting for so long. Get your carbs straightened out and I think you'll be ready for a test ride. Get the carbs off the bike and clean, then search the forum for how to set the float height. Get that done, then look at the FAQ tab on the left side and read Ed's tuning recipe.
Follow that to the letter. Please post your location to your profile. I am working on mine all day, so PM me if you want some phone advice. I am certainly no expert, but happy to help if I can.
Heres a little update. I picked up the factory plugs for the bike and installed them. The bike fired right up and idled at partial choke. After it died, I pulled the plugs and they are carbon fouled after a few minutes of running. Also, there is a bit of smoke belching from the tail pipe while running, not a lot but enough to be noticiable. Once again, it doesnt want to run. The compression tool I borrowed doesnt have the right adapter so I am going to have to wait until tomorrow to test that. I am also going to pull the carbs and check the floats for leaks, and make sure they are nice and clean.
float levelwhen placing the floats make sure the tang is just barely touching..
have the carb upside down on a work bench.. or something flat and level. the jet should jet barely be visible over the float.. this is the eyeball method.. works fine.. then be sure to follow the ed moore tuning and timing method.. word for word.. it works if done right.. if it dosent.. do it again. the dude know his stuff.. naptown
