1964 CYB77

Post by Shaver68 » Sun Feb 19, 2017 11:03 am

I have recently struck a deal on 1964 CYB77 and will be picking it up this coming Monday. A few questions I have as a rookie to the restoration game are as follows;

1. The bike idles and starts first kick but I'm told that once you ingage first gear and pull away it Boggs down under load. Would this be a jetting issue ?

2. It has original paint (or so I'm told) would giving the it a paint job de value or should I leave as is ?

3. Are there any differences internally that differ from the CB77 or is it just the front forks, steering damper, short rear fender, rear sets etc ?

I look forward to engaging in some chat about this machine with people that know their stuff, I look forward to any response that can start me on my journey with this awesome little bike !!

Welcome to the group! When you get the bike please post some pictures. A couple things before I start with your questions. I noticed you double posted the same write-up in 2 areas: please don't double post. Members may be answering questions that have already been answered. If you get a chance delete the other if there are no replies. On your profile please put your location. You may find a member lives in your area. Turns out one of our members lived a block from me.

1. Your bogging could be a few things. You're really going to need to check your bike over when it's in your hands to assess what you have. On the left margin in yellow under FAQ is Ed's tune up guide, read it. Are your carbs clean, including the jets passages? What pilot and main jets are you running? Do you have air horns or air filters? Getting fuel to both carbs? Are your float levels correct? Plugs fouled? Battery good and fully charged? Valves adjusted correctly? Timing set correctly? Throttle slides lifting at same time? Are throttle slides in backwards? (the left and right can be installed reversed- the cut-outs should face the air filters), etc.

2. I like original paint. If you look at the early American bikes all the way up into the 1960's, original paint bikes bring more money on the average than restored bikes. Honda painted these bikes with no primer, so the finish may not have survived well and not be pleasing to you. It's your bike, do what pleases you.

3. There were a lot of parts available over the counter by Honda to make a race bike, even a 5 speed transmission. Yoshimura also supplied engine parts; oversized valves, reground cams, lightened pistons, valve springs, etc.

Look forward to seeing photos.

Thank you for your reply;

Sorry for the double post, the other is now deleted and I have updated my profile to include my location.

I'm quite excited to pick the bike up, he has a ton of spare parts that come with it, so I'm looking forward to taking inventory of those also.

I tried to attach a few pictures that the fellow I purchased the bike from sent me but he's a photographer and I think the pictures are protected as it wouldn't let me attach them. If you search 1964 CB77 CYB77 superhawk cafe racer On youtube he posted a neat little clip of it.

I'll post some pictures on Monday.

From your posting description I thought that may be the bike. As soon as you put Canada in your location I was pretty certain. He posted that on one of the FaceBook forums back in October. This is his photography site where he posted photos at the time.

Nice bike!

As Tom says - there ar elots of CYB parts to convert a standard CB into a CYB. I don't think Honda sold CYB-kitted bikes.

There was a CYB camshaft and a set of banana-shaped carb inlet tubes. Also a set of straight-through CYB-kit megaphones and alloy wheel rims. Otherwise your's looks pretty complete. I have been collecting parts for my own CYB kit bike for a number of years. One half of the camshaft came from UK and the other from Australia.

The list of parts is included in the back of the early CB72/77 parts catalogue if you want to go shopping.....:-)

This is one of the most complete CYB-kitted bikes I have ever seen. It even has the ultra-rare header pipe protectors.

Thanks G Man;

He has boxes of parts included in the deal, I'll be rooting through them tomorrow to see if any of the parts you have listed are among them.

I see you're from Derby I'm an Englishman myself, moved to Canada a number of years ago from Devizes Wiltshire.

Oh I'll be shopping until I get everything I need 😀

Well she will be in the garage soon I'll send some pictures of my own then.

That is an amazing looking bike isn't it !! That's what I'm shooting for !!

Are the banana shaped velocity stacks hard to come by ?

Shaver

What do you think of Canada compared with Wiltshire? I am originally from Gloucestershire and have relatives in Wiltshire.

All those parts are rare and potentially expensive. I got my first camshaft half from David Silver and then the second half about 4 years later from Australia.

If you PM me an email address, I'll send you the 'shopping list' and some Yoshimura notes.

I'm still collecting parts for the 5-speed gear cluster.
