Starter Clutch Will Not Come off

Put a socket on the crankshaft side of the starter and grab it in a soft jaw vice so that it won't turn. Put a strip of emery cloth around the ring and put a hose clip(jubilee clip) over it and tighten it up so that the emery strip is gripping the ring. Then tap the clip in the direction you want. I use this method to remove the chrome trim on early front forks, with masking tape instead of emery cloth when a strap wrench won't work. If you want to remove the screws, put a correct screwdriver tip into the screw head and clamp it up in the vice then back the vice off a little while holding on to the starter. Then put a spanner on the screwdriver tip and there is enough play there for you to break the tension on the screw.
