Thanks to Ed, I now have a working speedometer again!

I did a flush out and relube of the clutch cable. It's working well, now.

My, that bike runs good!

Sara

Where was the break?

Nice easy fix, anyway! Great to be out on a bike. My projects just keep slipping. JUst too many other things to do. I'm envious ..... :-)

Graham, my bike is no where near the gem yours is going to be! You're bringing back a true masterpiece.

The cable broke about a foot from the drive. The more I think about it, the more I come to believe I should replace the whole cable. Ed sent me the internal cable, which was in perfect shape. I am worried there may be a burr or something inside the sheath, which is why the speedo needle bounces around so much.

Sara

A running Hawk is worth two in the workshop....... I'm sure someone said that.... :-)

I would guess that the place you mention is the place where maximum deflection happens when the forks pump so it is going to be a weak(ish) spot. If the outer has developed a kink at that spot it might be worth replacing the whole thing but, if not, you are probably good for a few years.

Enjoy that SuperHawk - I'm catching you up. Slowly..... :-)

Graham, yes, good points. There is no kink, at least externally. I don't like the speedometer needle bouncing around the way it does, but, oh well (for now!).

Good saying....it must be in a book somewhere? "Zen and the Art of..." perhaps? ;)

I'm looking forward to you riding your Superhawk!!

I've pulled out the instrument cluster and I have it sitting in a shallow container of 30W oil. LM suggested I do this to allow the oil to wick up into the mechanism of the speedo and tach. Hopefully it will cure the "needle bouncing" that the speedo is doing. This is a last resort before I bite the bullet and send it to a repair outfit...

That should help. You just need to make sure you don't get too much lube wicked into the speedo as it can discolor the face if it evaporates in hot weather.
