So are you saying the handle bars were replaced? Could it have been due to an accident? There are a few scuffs here & there. Can you send me a link to a photo of a correct bike?

Also, how do you know it is a 1966? I'm not questioning you, just curious on how the serial numbers work.

Any idea where I might find the correct handle bars?

The correct bars for your bike will be the flat ones.
Should find pics in the photo section of this forum.
Your frame number is proof of year of issue and your bike doesn't have the 1967 changes to head light and tail light and the fork sliders.

What an amazing time capsule. As you surmised, it has been laid down on both sides- see the headlamp rim, lever ball end, grips and front fender for evidence.

BTW, the front wheel was removed and replaced at some time and the lock washer at teh top of teh torque arm is not on correctly.

Do you plan on restoring to perfect 100 point finish or to get it to the condition it was in when your dad put it away? the latter might be a good place to start. get it running and with new or repaired mufflers and keep it polished.

I am the original poster of this thread but can't revive my account do to an email issue.

I lost momentum once I got the bike from RI to NC. However, now I've got some time AND my NC Motorcycle Learner permit & MSF Basic Riders Course card. So, now I'm on the case again...

Can anyone recommend a source for obtaining:

A battery with the correct terminal locations
Air filters
An owner's manual
A service mannual
A website that can decode my serial number?

Thanks for any advice.The engine still turns over with the kick start and the electrical system works when charged.
