Coil replacement

Post by Raceman » Mon Oct 16, 2017 10:33 pm

My CA77 has a weak spark on both cylinders. Bike has new points and caps. Perhaps it's time for a new coil and wires. I see several options, Ebay aftermarket coils, Charlie's Place(expensive) and a Suzuki/Kawasaki coil. NOS Honda coils don't seem to exist. What type have folks had success with. Your input appreciated.

Still running the original coil in my 67 CA77, same coil it had when I found it in a junkyard 20 years ago - still runs fine.
Do what you've always done and you'll get what you've always had.

Have tried a new capacitor? Cheaper than a coil.

Coil replacement

I ordered a Magna dual output 5ohm coil from 4 into 1. Their site said it would work on a Dream. It may work but the side cover will not go on. Elsewhere on this site, people say most any coil from a 70's 4 cyl Honda will work. 4 into 1 has a 30501-300-003 reproduction coil for cb350f, 400f 550, and 750. The picture of it looks like it will fit ok. Anyone have experience with these coil from the 4 cyl Hondas?

I've used both CB400 and CB750 carbs on a race motor in the past with no problems, either should work OK on your C77.

The CB400 coil has a higher low voltage resistance so current consumption will be a bit less than the CB750 unit.

I installed the 30501-300-003 coil on my CA77. I was originally intended for use on CB550 and CB750. It fits properly and functions fine.
