How to check coil on a 305 dream

Post by Hondaboy » Mon Jun 27, 2016 10:48 pm

I am getting a lot of misfiring on my dream 305 and I have the carb set up correctl. I am thinking it is the coil but I would like to check it. It has an automobile style coil and it looks original. Any help on how to check the coil and what replacement should I use. I have new wires and caps. Any guidance would be appreciated.

As the engine is running watch the points for sparking.
If you see lots of sparks shut off the engine and draw a Business Card through them (closed) then watch for change. .................lm

Hondaboy, Can you send a pic of your coil? I don't think any Honda Dream had an automobile style coil. Perhaps a Harley coil has been swapped in its place.

They had a round/black with 2 wire locations for wires to the plugs. ..................lm

LM, were there different style coils for early/late model Dreams? Or were you referring to the Harley coil? The Dream coil I had years ago was rectangular and tan in color.
