I wonder about that coil. dream coils should have screw on wire connectors (early), or wires potted directly into the case(late).
Good luck

How to check coil on a 305 dreamIf the points are sparking when the engine is running, that can indicate a bad condenser.
Old high tension leads/plug caps can cause misfire/poor running. Replace leads with new. Replace plug caps. If you suspect that the high tension leads are leaking, put fuel line around each coil wire for better insulation. Are the points' mating surfaces clean and smooth? If not, file/sand smooth. Check timing using strobe light (just buy one, they're cheap and it's the only way to properly check the timing). Gap the points/plugs as per the manual. Check tappet clearance. Check float level. Check for good fuel flow from petcock and to carb float bowl (dirt can fill in behind the float needle seat, causing flow restriction). New spark plugs, or sandblast clean and test the plugs using a plug tester. Just because the plugs spark when resting on the head doesn't mean they'll spark under compression. Check the coil for resistance using an ohm meter (plenty info online). Do what you've always done and you'll get what you've always had.
