Coils... Good or bad?

Post by SUperhawk_Clark » Mon Mar 19, 2012 8:05 pm

Hello Everyone,

Attached below are some pictures of my coils connected to my voltmeter.

The last photo is my voltmeter with the probes touching each other, my understanding is that the meter should read zero, to the right, but I can not calibrate it to zero. So my meter might be off...

The other two photos are of the coils with the voltmeter and the reading is the same as the probes touching each other.

Does that reading mean good coils or bad coils?

The first pic is where she is at right now...

Thank you,

Clark

Doubtful that you have 2 bad coils. It's hard to read the scale from your pics. I'd retest with a different meter and compare your results.

I would agree that both coils would go at the same time.

The odd thing is I get a different volt reading when I measure at the spark boot end, both are low in the 4 to 4.5 volt range. So would that be a bad wire running from the coil to the plug?

I had thought about clipping the plug wires but the ones I have do not present a clear place to clip the wire and re-crimp the wire. In other words no clear boot in the wire.

You can try an adjustable gap spark tester to compare coil output. Your reading with the meter is not useful. I'd trim back the wire at both ends about 1/2" and get some new plug ends. NGK's are available at most auto parts stores. New wire is an option also. Goo
