I don't think it's a weak dollar as that is rising at the moment. I think it is more to do with differences in wealth / culture over the years.
Americans have been a wealthier breed over the years and generally were able to have motorcycles as leisure items (toys perhaps) and plenty of space to store them when they became unwanted. This means plenty of bikes and parts available which, perhaps, depresses the prices. In the UK money was in shorter supply so bikes got run into the ground and were sent to the scrap heap when they ceased to be useful as space was not available to store them. This means that these bikes are scarcer here and demand is increasing. The US is the ideal place to get parts which are just not available here anymore. I have just bought a rough US import SuperHawk for what you guys would consider a ridiculous price. Although butchered by POs it is pretty sound with a rust-free (amazing) gas tank, perfect side covers and seat trim (although slightly butchered) in place. To me, it is eminently restorable. So no, I don't think it is a currency issue, just that you guys a) had the money to buy this stuff first time around in large numbers, and b) you had enough space to store it for the rest of us until we got wealthy enough to buy it......
