Has anyone tried to title a bike in California,
how difficult and costly is it? Thanks mates.
TitleI've done California. Assuming it hasn't been on the road for a while, here's a link to the DMV info required;
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr14.htm They say maybe no records after 4 years- definitely none after 7 years. What they don't tell you, motorcycles MUST be VIN checked by the CHP (not by DMV.) The bike must be in running condition for them to clear it. If it isn't running just call and have them run the VIN numbers to make sure it's clear before working on it, then wait until running to register it ( this was suggested to me by the CHP.) Cost is dependent on several factors. If not registered but still on the books there might be penalties unless a "non-op" was put on it. "use tax" is dependent on what you paid for it, or at least what your bill of sale says you paid. Basic transfer fees around $28. license fees vary some by county (haven't got license yet.) If you have all the paperwork ready it shouldn't be too hard, HOWEVER, I have had dealings with some DMV offices where the people try to make you jump through hoops that aren't required, I guess just to show they can, others where they're really helpful. I've found that the small rural offices seem to be the best. I have used the commercial offices the last few years with great success, but only because I have access to them through my job. 63 CA78
